What is an Affair?

“Oh duh” you’d be saying, that’s simple you say. “An affair is when you cheat.”

Yeah sure smarty two shoes. But what is cheating? Is it when you look at another man or woman lustfully or is it the act of copulation that seals the affair as true?

A dictionary definition of an affair (in the context of marital infidelity) is when a married individual has a physical relationship with a party to whom they are not married. Or so you would think. My dictionary under the listing “affair” simply says: “celebrated or notorious happening; Love affair.” Love affair?! I guess the topic is more subjective to each person’s opinion to what an affair really is.

Some people may say a married man or woman already initiated an affair by looking at another in lust. Others would say intercourse. Or any kind of sexual misdemeanor. Others would argue back to the thoughts of lust. It’s all in the head they would say – the emotional attraction determines the commitment to infidelity.

Because it is subject to personal interpretation an affair is often defined by the offended spouse.
